Could Awaab’s Law trigger a deluge of “no-win-no fee” claims?

Are UK Housing Associations and Local Authorities ready for the “no win no fee” vultures circling round them with Awaab’s Law?

I received a call this morning from an offshore call centre saying they were from “Housing Repairs” and asking if I’d had any problems with damp and mould.

I decided to play along and said I had some damp in my bathroom, and was immediately transferred to a “supervisor” who then asked me a whole load of questions such as how long I’d been suffering the problems, whether there were any problems with my windows and doors. I even asked if him if this was to do with Awaab’s Law and he said yes it was.

I managed to play along for a few minutes until he finally asked me who my landlord was and I told him I owned my own home - at which point he told me they’re only representing tenants, not homeowners.

These firms are going to create operational chaos for housing providers, drive up costs for everyone and almost certainly exploit the very people this law is aimed at protecting.

We witnessed the same thing happen in insurance several years ago, with costs being driven up as a result of the industry failing to respond quickly enough.

If you’d like help ensuring your operational teams are ready for the impacts of Awaab’s Law going live then get in touch to find out how we can help.
